me and my roomate are arguing about saving money on our energy bill and he constently turns the air off saying that it will save money BUT with in an hour of him turing it off me or my other rommie will turn it back on. Does it really save or should we lower the temp when someone is not in the house vs. turning it off?

I just moved to an apt and installed is an energy star room A/C unit. It gives two options for cooling: Cool and Energy Saver. I figured the energy saver would save me $$ but im worried bec it kicks off when the room gets cool then kicks back on a few mins later. Wont that constant on-off actually cost me more? Should I just leave it on Cool at all times?

standard 8 ft ceiling) I would assume it’s about a 12% reduction in actual cubic footage and I was wondering if it would save you about that much in energy costs ?

My roommate and I are having a little “disagreement” about our window AC. I like to turn off the AC when I leave the apartment to save energy. She likes to leave it on all day on 73 because she thinks that it saves energy and she is hot natured and doesn’t like the apartment hot when she gets home. Please tell me that she is wrong.

This is a recurring debate in our office. I say keeping the thermostat on a steady temp. is more efficient. Others think that by making sure the heat or AC does not cut on over the weekends or at night is most efficient. For example, for AC, this would be changing the thermo. from 75 to 80 to save energy. Doesn’t that mean that the units just have to work harder to get the temp. back to 75 when the employees come back to work?

My parents are very conscious of energy bills and even shut off the water heaters and only turn them on when taking a shower. Is this necessary? Most places I know keep them on 24/7 without a problem. How much energy are they really saving by doing this practice?

save energy by turning water heater off?

cardinalrules asked:

a friend recently told us that he turns the water heater in his home off in the late morning, after taking a shower, and turns it back on early morning, about an hour before he showers. does this actually save energy/money? will doing this damage the water heater?

i know people turn water heaters off during extended periods of time (e.g. vacations), but is the day-to-day solution a good one?

I’ve heard that setting the thermostat to ON will save energy by constently cycling cold air from the basement to the rest of the house, keeping the AC off. Does this work? It would seem that having the Fan run all the time would use more electricity than even just having the Air Conditioning switch on and off.

i have a 40 gallon electrical water heater tank at my business. should i turn it on only during business hours (10am-7pm) to save energy?

i thought heat loss from the tank always occurs unless there is something else that i am not aware of.
will it be bad for the water heater tank in the long run if i turn it on/off evryday?
